Home Learning
Home learning is anything children do outside the normal school day that contributes to their learning, in response to guidance from the school. It covers a variety of activities initiated by teachers and parents/carers to support children's learning. Home learning can add much to a child's development. It is an example of cooperation between teachers and parents/carers.
The aims of home learning are to:
- be an enjoyable experience
- support children in becoming independent learners
- promote cooperation between home and school in supporting each child's learning
- enable some aspects of the curriculum to be further explored independently
- reinforce learning that has taken place during the school day
- help children develop life skills such as planning tasks to meet a deadline

Prioritising daily reading for pleasure
Parents and carers who want the best start in life are likely to read with their children when possible, and see reading together as an opportunity for special bonding time. We encourage all children to have a reading book at home so they can read for pleasure daily.
Google Classroom
Google Classroom is our Y1-6 Virtual Learning Environment. This platform prepares pupils for secondary school and the world of work. Pupils in Y1-6 can access home learning activities, curriculum information and learning resources designed to support that term's classroom learning, by logging onto their Google Classroom at any time and through any device.
Tapestry
Tapestry is our Early Years Virtual Learning Environment. It provides all parents of children in Nursery and Reception with a 'learning journal', detailing life in the Early Years at Garfield. Parents are encouraged to communicate home learning through uploading some home experiences to Tapestry.
Remote Education
Please find below copies of Remote Education procedures and guidelines we adopted during covid restrictions. These gave clarity to pupils, parents and carers on what to expect from Remote Education at Garfield during national lockdowns.
