Governors
The Governing Body is actively involved in the life of the school.
Garfield School governors provide strategic leadership and accountability at the school. The team of governors appoints the Head Teacher and holds the main responsibility for the finance of school.
The role of the governing board is a strategic one; its key functions are to:
- Set the aims and objectives for the school
- Set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
- Set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
- Monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
- Be a source of challenge and support to the Head Teacher

Composition of the Governing Body
There are 12 governors in Garfield's governing body, 11 of whom who are elected/appointed initially for a four-year term, and the head teacher who is ex-officio (they have positions on the board for as long as they remain in their post).
The governing body must comprise the following:

three parents elected by the parents

six co-opted governors

one appointed by the Local Authority

one headteacher

one staff governor
The full governing body meets as a whole group at least once a term to approve policies, review the progress and direction of the school and vote on significant decisions. However, governors are in constant contact with the school and each other, as well as attend at least one of the sub-committees once a term.

Resources (R)
This committee deals with matters relating to personnel, finance and premises.

Curriculum and Standards (C&S)
This committee is responsible for making sure the school follows the National Curriculum.
